Exclusive: What was ABC’s campaign director doing at the FIFA World Cup with Vancouver’s top cops?

Trevor Ford, who became Mayor Ken Sim’s chief of staff in June 2023, told ABC Vancouver supporters on May 30 that he switched duties to become campaign director for the party.

Less than three weeks later, on June 18, he walked past theBreaker’s camera at Terry Fox Plaza and entered B.C. Place Stadium around 20 minutes before kickoff of Canada’s group stage match versus Qatar in the FIFA World Cup.

Ford was with Vancouver Police Chief Steve Rai, Senior Deputy Chief Howard Chow, Supt. Trevor Burmachuk and others in uniform.

Ford appeared to be wearing a City of Vancouver employee pass and showed his FIFA World Cup accreditation pass at the Terry Fox Plaza gate.

Sim and ABC came to power in 2022 with the historic endorsement from the Vancouver Police Union. The party’s platform for the Oct. 17 election boasts that it fully funded the Vancouver Police Department. The budget for 2026 was $497 million.

Vancouver city hall denied theBreaker’s freedom of information request about Ford’s attendance at the FIFA World Cup. Access to information and privacy director April Miller cited the section of the law about records that do not relate to the business of the public body.
