Vancouver Park Board commissioner quits ABC campaign

Bob Mackin

One of two Park Board commissioners seeking re-election with Mayor Ken Sim’s ABC Vancouver party announced late Sept. 5 that she quit the campaign.

Angela Haer, elected in 2022, was also a director of KidsPlay, the charity founded by suspended Vancouver Police Const. Kal Dosanjh. Dosanjh was charged Sept. 3 with fraud, theft and breach of trust.

Haer did not give a reason for ending her bid for re-election, but said on Facebook and X that she would serve out her term and wished the ABC team best of luck. Jas Virdi, also elected in 2022, is the only remaining ABC incumbent seeking another term as commissioner. Civic election day is Oct. 17.

Haer has not immediately responded to theBreaker for comment.

“This decision gives me the opportunity to focus on my young family, my professional future, and the next chapter of service beyond Park Board,” said Haer’s post.

“This was not an easy decision. After raising my children for more then 20 years and now a single mom, serving Vancouver has been one of the great privileges of my life. I remain proud of the work I have done on behalf of YVR residents, families, seniors, children, athletes, and the many community groups who rely on our parks, pools, beaches, fields, and recreation facilities every day.“

What is KidsPlay?

On the Canada Revenue Agency charity directory, Haer was identified as a KidsPlay director from June 1, 2023 to May 31, 2025. In an August 2025 Facebook post, however, she wrote: “As a board member, I’m proud to stand alongside Kal Dosanjh, Sandy Dosanjh and so many incredible leaders who are making a real impact.“

Dosanjh’s charity, officially known as Kids Play Youth Foundation, reported $451,116 in revenue, including $391,588 in receipted donations and $10,908 government funding in 2024-2025, and spent $421,189, including $386,389 on charitable programs.

According to the CRA directory, it is “a non-profit organization committed towards keeping kids away from the lifestyle of drugs, gangs, and violence, by reinforcing a sense of belonging and self-worth in vulnerable youth.”

Failed Conservative bid

In November 2024, Haer unsuccessfully sought the nomination for the Conservative Party in the Vancouver Granville riding. Then-ABC president Marie Rogers got the nod, but lost in the 2025 election to incumbent Liberal Taleeb Noormohamed.

Rogers is now on the ABC ticket for the Park Board election.
